The Akilah Institute For Women
The Akilah Institute is a vocational training and leadership institute located in Bugesera, Rwanda for a diverse group of motivated young women. The institute provides students with a unique curriculum that emphasizes leadership development, practical training, and entrepreneurial skills.
The mission of Akilah is to transform the lives of young women by empowering them with the skills and knowledge to find meaningful employment and to overcome poverty.
One of our GFC Staff Members, Ashley Smith, traveled to Rwanda last year with the volunteer service organization Global Youth Connect. Below she describes her experience and her reaction to the creation of the Akilah Institute For Women:
"Hi ladies,
I just wanted to share this email with you.
The Akilah Institute for Women was started by an alumni of the program that I went to Rwanda with. I am usually at a loss for words when I am asked about my trip. I’ve decided that the best word is “raw”. From my perspective, it sums up everything I saw, experienced and the way I left.
I have been reading about the building of this school for the last 8 months. It has been in conception for sometime before that but to see that they are now taking applications puts a good feeling into my heart.
The school will offer some great opportunities for the women who attend which will hopefully ripple back into the community.
Check out the website if you get a chance!
Ashley"

"On a Tuesday morning in June 2009, I walked into the office of Girls For A Change, in Santa Cruz CA. I had initially visited the tiny office several months prior during my interview with the organization. At the time the space was cluttered with boxes, posters, binders, and other materials. This time when I entered, items seemed to have taken their rightful place. The office had morphed into a large, bright room with big windows centered on the front half, and a small room cramped on the side w… Continue
